The Parable of the Pencil

I’ve been quiet for many reasons, one of them being lack of time as I’ve had to sort my life out, moving from Thailand to London. But the first reason comes from fear.

I forgot how to write and why I should write. Writer’s block, call it what you must. I let fear, opinions and comparisons get in my head again. I let the problems of the world get me down. After all the self searching, traveling, closures and awesome experiences in Thailand…I felt like a huge failure. Things didn’t go as planned in life and I’m not here to moan, but I’m also not here to sugar-coat shit. We are all human and some days we question everything and our significance. For me personally, I wondered who would really read my blog, what’s the point? How can even begin to put my mark in this world? How do I fit in this world? Am I suppose to fit in? The questions are endless.

I then got this story with a gift for my birthday (July) but only received it a few days ago in the mail. Inside it said, “…to one of the ‘sharpest’ pencils I know,  always leaving her mark wherever she goes!

The pencil maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box. “Before I send you out into the world, there are 5 things you need to know”, he told the pencil.

“Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be…

  1. You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.

  2. You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.

  3. You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

  4. The most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside.

  5. On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write. “

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose is his heart.

Now, replace the pencil with YOU. Always remember them, and you will become the best person you can be.

  1. You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in God’s hand. Allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess.

  2. You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems in life, but you’ll need it to become a stronger person.

  3. You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

  4. The most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside.

  5. On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark. No matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.

Allow this parable on the pencil to encourage you to know that you are a special person and only you can fulfil the purpose to which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot make a change.

Now I know this man was probably crazy for talking to a pencil, but the story behind it, is quite powerful. It amazes me how this simple story came into my life at just the right moment. I thought I had to share it and you may pass this on as encouragement, whether you believe in God/a higher power or not. We sure could all use some more positivity in the world.

To the next blog,

  1. Wowww…what a great message. Thank u for this. Sometimes in life we forget that the “sharpening” process is vital and the only way to improve.
